If you have ever flown in or out of Denver International Airport, you may have noticed the statue of a gigantic blue mustang that has glowing red eyes at night. Standing 32 feet tall and weighing in at 9000 pounds, it's one of the most original statues in the state of Colorado. It's creation was requested in 1992 for $300,000 but was not completed until 2008. It is also worth noting that an accident while constructing Blucifer was the cause of death of its creator, Luis Jimenez. The red eyes pay homage to the deceased artists father, who owned a neon sign shop.
Like everything these days, there are those who love the statue and those who want it taken down. In my opinion, Blucifer's story has too much history and gives the city too much character to be replaced. An accident while constructing Blucifer was the cause of death of its creator, Luis Jimenez, when one of the pieces came loose and pinned him against a wall in his loft. The red eyes pay homage to the deceased artists father, who owned a neon sign shop.
Every time I drive past Blucifer it reminds me of the scene in a movie from my childhood called "The Never Ending Story." In this scene the hero of the story Atreyu has to get past two gigantic statues with glowing eyes that shoot lasers at anyone who dares pass.
That’s exactly what I think of the monument named Blucifer could do to anyone who tries to leave the state of Colorado via airplane. Or maybe it's purpose is to stand security for any of the passengers that enter the airport at DIA. Either way it is a really cool statue and worthy of my own little think piece and tribute of art work which you can find off to the right.
